“It is a great thing to know our vices” ~ Cicero
After a few cold snaps, my brain leans towards the remaining enthusiasm trout have for surface patterns at the beginning of November. The errant terrestrials, such as tree crickets, ants, and subtle, nondescript hopper patterns. Midges start to interest our chilly friends but only for short windows of time during the day. Winds carry leaf rafts that act as fleets of battle ships ready to destroy your dead drifts. A subtle 5-mile-an-hour wind is enough to bring down a variable blizzard of maple and birch leaves. Dead winds are your best ally. Patience and a calm cast with 6 or 7x targeting mirror glass rise forms that have an APB out on you the moment you step into the water. My vices are ready for an extended nap; meanwhile, another vise gets burnished for another winter of discovery, defeat, and mind-numbing levels of caffeine.
