RIO Premier LightLine DT for bamboo fly rods
I am often asked whether I use synthetic lines. The answer is most definitely yes. For my shorter cane creek rods, I use Rio Premier LightLine DT exclusively in 2- and 3-weight lines. This line is very supple and extremely “quiet,” for lack of a better word. It is the line that I use for the spookiest and weariest browns in gin-clear water. The line loads up quickly in most moderate action fly rods, be it glass, cane, or graphite. Although Rio LightLine has been around for a while, many fly fishers do not experiment with it primarily because there is a stigma about short-distance lines. Many novices think they always need the ability to shoot a line at long distances and gravitate toward more aggressive line tapers, which puts them at a significant disadvantage for the task at hand. The most important factor when casting to a very selective trout is quiet, precise casts, period. Rio LightLine is the right decision for these types of conditions, especially when fishing water like The Letort Spring Run, Big Spring Creek, Spruce Creek, and other very technical watersheds. You do not want a lot of line on the surface of the water; the more line that hits the water, the more noise you make. This line is for very accurate short-distance casting. I like to explain it by comparing a .22-caliber target rifle to a shotgun. The Lightline is the Target rifle. Try this line on your lighter-weight rods; you will be on target and quiet, which immediately gives you the upper hand.
