CDC Stillborn Deep Olive Caddis Pupa

The “stillborn caddis pupa” is a pattern I use often during blanket hatches. It imitates an easy meal, and during heavy hatches with adults and subsurface specimens in the mix, being stuck in the surface film triggers a trout's immediate interest. My version of this very productive fly uses a loop wing with loose trailing CDC strands. The cripple uses a Tiemco 212Y emerger hook as well as a varnished quill body. A kapok dubbed thorax keeps this fly right in the surface film. A simple fly that I tie down to a #19 TMC 212Y.
Shown tied on a #15 TMC 212Y
Deep brown olive CDC loop wing
Polish quill abdomen dyed deep olive
Hook: TMC 212Y #15
Thread: UTC Ultra 70 Olive
Body: Polish quill dyed olive with w/varnish
Loop Wing: Olive CDC
Thorax: Kapok mixed with UV
Eyes: 20lb sea green monofilament (singed ends)
If you want to spark instant interest during a hatch and feel lost in the mix, this is the fly I rely upon to dial in on my targets. Again, a very simple fly that gets heads to turn in the fray. A fly that also receives some dramatic strikes!
