Midori Emerger a favorite for the Yamame Trout
On the Tokachi River in Japan, bright green Chironomids flourish, a favorite food for the Yamame or Cherry Trout. In its emergent stage, as seen above, I tie this #19 212Y Midori midge to mimic these brightly colored midges. The “Y” in the hook's name stands for Yamame, the very river the hook was designed for. The Tiemco 212Y boasts a 4x hook shank and a massive 5x-wide gape and runs in odd sizes #11-#21. This is a favorite hook for this river; its very fine wire was specifically designed to catch these shy and elusive Cherry Trout. These Cherry Trout are wild in the Hokkaido river system, which is also filled with hot springs in this very mountainous region of Japan.
The TMC 212Y is one of my favorite hooks; I use it for most of my smaller emerger patterns. It is a very difficult hook to find now, so I never throw out spent flies on these hooks. I reuse these hooks religiously, resharpen the points, heat-treat them, and refurbish them if need be.
Above photo: Hair trimmed between the ears of this green hare's ear mask, mixed with sage green Kapok, and light green beaver belly, makes for a high-floating, impressionistic mixture. The black-dubbed head is then finished with black Kapok mixed with black SLF squirrel with bits of UV.

A small, simple fly pattern never fails; no gimmicks, proportion, bulk, uniformity, and materials are your only hurdles.
